New York Is Now The 5th State To Offer A Third Gender Option- Gender “X”

January 1, 2019, New York will pass the bill Intro 954-A. A law for official documents to have a third gender option, “X,” for individuals who identify as nonbinary or gender-nonconforming.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio signed the bill on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at a signing ceremony. Making New York the fifth state in the U.S. to offer a third gender along with California, Washington, New Jersey, and Oregon.

“For so many folks for so many years had to deal with documents that did not reflect their reality, I can only begin to imagine what that challenge was like, what that pain was like. “  de Blasio said at the signing ceremony, according to Huffington Post.

The passing of the new law allows residents of New York to submit their own affidavits, rather than having to request a letter from a licensed health care provider or physician.

The bill was proposed by City Council Speaker Corey Johnson in June 2018, and passed the council vote in September 2018, winning 41-6.

During the signing ceremony, De Blasio also stated, “this legislation is very clear it says you can identify yourself as a male, female, or with an X, on a New York City birth certificate.”

This no law no longer requires New York residents to have a surgical procedure take place in order to change their gender identity, which was a previous law that passed in 2014.

“ Future generations will not have to suffer,” said transgender activist Tanya Asapansa-Johnson Walker, at the signing ceremony.

Many actions still need to take place across the country for more people to identify themselves correctly.

There are still issues for those who have chosen the third gender from the five states that allow gender “X” to be accepted in the other states, who have not passed a third gender law.

According to NBC News, when it comes to changing genders on a passport a person still needs to get a letter from a physician. Although intersex people are not denied a passport that is gender-neutral.
