Screen Shot 2017-10-06 at 10.29.27 PM“My research is the best research ever,” Lynn Comella said at the Los Angeles, Pleasure Chest, where a discussion on her book Vibrator Nation: How Feminist Sex-Toy Stores Changed the Business of Pleasure, took place October 5th.

During the discussion, Comella was joined by fellow sex educator Tristan Taormino, who led a Q & A for Comella’s book. As the questions progressed, the discussion took a deeper dive into the author’s personal experience while touring sex-toy manufacturers for her research.

The author and feminist, Lynn Comella, is a college professor of gender and sexuality at UNLV, in the department of interdisciplinary, gender and ethnic studies. She is an award-winning researcher, who designed an extensive project for feminist, and sex-toy businesses, which her book explains in more detail.

The discussion was light and lasted for two hours, but it gave its audience a deeper understanding of how the business of pleasure is expanding each day.

The sex-toy business is a billion-dollar corporation, but many people are still not aware of the benefits of sexual pleasure. Lynn Comella explains in her book how women took charge of the male dominating adult store industry. Most people do not understand is that most of the founders of well-known sex toy stores of today are queer.

Women who opened adult stores in the past thought they were taking a risk because it was dominated by men. Little did the women know they were not alone with their desired idea of what a sex store should be. In fact, men wanted the type of adult store that women designed because it made them feel more comfortable to shop and explore.

Once it was out in the open that sex stores were not a shameful place to gain sex positive knowledge, and learn new ways to have pleasurable moments with a partner the industry began to boom.

Screen Shot 2017-10-06 at 10.00.56 PM“It’s a pleasure forward, pleasure-based sex-ed,” Comella explains the mission for adult toy stores. The novelty sex toy stores are meant to be a location where a person can be sexually free and feel comfortable exploring the different ways they can be pleased or please another.

Since there are not many avenues in the American society that teach the pleasures of sex. Educators and students turn to the adult toy industry to utilize their knowledge and share with those that are curious.

It is a diverse community where nobody is judged, and everyone is willing to share, teach, and learn from one another.
